[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Sober community housing is a substance-free living environment where people may stay after leaving treatment. It can also be used by those attending outpatient programs, or occasionally as a stand-alone treatment.
The transition from treatment to everyday life can be difficult. After leaving an environment wholly devoted to recovery, you must learn to live day-to-day life sober while navigating any environmental triggers.
Sober living can help make that transition easier. In community housing, people practice sober daily life in an environment conducive to recovery. It provides a built-in community of people committed to sobriety.
Typically, no formal treatment is provided on-site, but residents are encouraged to participate in activities that promote their recovery, such as 12-step fellowships. The goal is to create a positive living environment away from relapse triggers.
Numerous studies have highlighted the importance of an environment on recovery outcomes. One study that followed people with Alcohol Use Disorder over a 16-year period associated social support with increased abstinence.
Another study, which examined two sober community housing communities, found a 68% abstinence rate at six and 12 months. The study also found that the average length of stay in these communities surpassed the National Institute on Drug Abuse’s recommendation of 90 days; average stay at these housing communities was between 166 and 254 days. Longer stays were associated with significant improvement.
When making a decision on whether to live in sober housing after treatment, it is important to consider the home life to which you would be returning otherwise. Do you have a lot of connections to people who support your sobriety? Or does your social network consist of people who use substances? If the latter, sober community housing would be something to think about.
