Kristin Davis, the actor best known for playing Charlotte on Sex in the City, has been sober for over 30 years—before she starred on the show. In fact, she credits acting for her continuous sobriety.
“Acting is the only thing that made me want to ever get sober,” she said. “I didn’t have anything that was that important to me other than trying to dull my senses.”[1]
Davis started drinking at a young age. As a teenager, she felt awkward and insecure and found that drinking eased those feelings. Davis also got sober young, attending addiction treatment at age 22, which began decades of continuous sobriety. She said that before she quit drinking, she didn’t think she’d live past 30.
Davis is not private about her addiction. However, because she quit drinking before her career took off, not in the spotlight—and Sex in the City popularized the Cosmopolitan—many people don’t realize she’s sober.
“It’s caused a lot of confusion out in the world,” she said. “I get sent many a Cosmo! I never drink them. I believe [alcohol use disorder] is a disease. I don’t think you can mess with it. There was a time when people who didn’t know me well would say, ‘Couldn’t you just have one glass of champagne?’ And I would say, ‘No.’ I’m doing well. I still have occasional bad days. Why risk it?”[2]
