Partial hospitalization programs (PHPs) are a level of care in addiction treatment. These programs offer more intensive treatment than regular outpatient programs, but unlike with residential treatment, you don’t live at the facility while receiving care.
PHPs are typically several hours, three to five days a week. They are great for those who may need a higher level of care, but have a great support system at home that they want to rely on. PHPs offer a highly structured environment in which to recover, while allowing for a little more flexibility. As PHPs don’t require room and board, they can also be more affordable.
Some people may initiate treatment by attending a partial hospitalization program. However, it can also be a step down after completing residential treatment, to help people transition to everyday life. A person may also attend a PHP before moving down to outpatient treatment.
At a partial hospitalization program, a person in recovery from addiction practices the skills to cope with daily life sober. They learn to communicate effectively, and they get help repairing their relationships. When leaving a PHP, people have the tools to live a new, sober life.
